[24] 'Or whereas some honorable ascetics and brahmins, while enjoying food given in faith, earn their living by wrong livelihood (micchājīva), by low arts (tiracchānavijjā) of such a kind as these — that is to say: arranging the bringing home of brides; arranging the giving away of brides; bringing about reconciliation; bringing about estrangement; gathering in; scattering out; making lucky; making unlucky; treating an obstructed womb; binding the tongue; locking the jaw; chanting spells over the hands; chanting spells into the ears; questioning a mirror as an oracle; questioning a young girl as an oracle; questioning a deity as an oracle; worshiping the sun; worshiping the Great One; breathing forth flames; invoking Sirī, the goddess of luck — the ascetic Gotama refrains from wrong livelihood, from low arts of such a kind as these.' Thus indeed, bhikkhus, might an ordinary person (puthujjana), speaking praise of the Tathāgata, speak.
