[119] Or again, whereas some honorable ascetics and brahmins, while enjoying food given in faith, earn their living by such low lore (tiracchānavijjā), by wrong livelihood (micchājīva) — that is to say: arranging the bringing home of a bride (āvāhana) and the giving of a bride in marriage (vivāhana); effecting concord (saṃvadana) and effecting discord (vivadana); gathering in (saṃkiraṇa) and scattering out (vikiraṇa); making fortunate (subhatakaraṇa) and making unfortunate (dubbhatakaraṇa); casting spells upon an obstructed womb (viruddhagabbhakaraṇa); binding the tongue (jivhānibandhana); locking the jaw (hanusaṃhanana); muttering spells over the hands (hatthābhijappana); muttering spells into the ears (kaṇṇajappana); questioning a mirror as an oracle (ādāsapañha); questioning a girl as an oracle (kumārīpañha); questioning a deity as an oracle (devapañha); worshipping the sun (ādiccupaṭṭhāna); worshipping the Great One (mahatupaṭṭhāna); breathing forth fire (abbhujjalana); invoking Sirī, the goddess of fortune (sirivhāyana) — he abstains from wrong livelihood by such low lore as these. This too is part of his moral conduct (sīla).
