[249] "Furthermore, Mahāli, for a bhikkhu in the southern quarter … in the western quarter … in the northern quarter … above, below, and across, concentration (samādhi) has been developed in both aspects: for the seeing of divine forms that are pleasing, connected with sensuality, and provocative of lust, and for the hearing of divine sounds that are pleasing, connected with sensuality, and provocative of lust. When concentration has been developed in both aspects—above, below, and across—for the seeing of divine forms that are pleasing, connected with sensuality, and provocative of lust, and for the hearing of divine sounds that are pleasing, connected with sensuality, and provocative of lust, he sees divine forms above, below, and across that are pleasing, connected with sensuality, and provocative of lust, and he hears divine sounds that are pleasing, connected with sensuality, and provocative of lust. And why is that? Because, Mahāli, this is how it is for a bhikkhu when concentration has been developed in both aspects—above, below, and across—for the seeing of divine forms that are pleasing, connected with sensuality, and provocative of lust, and for the hearing of divine sounds that are pleasing, connected with sensuality, and provocative of lust.
"This, Mahāli, is the cause, this is the condition, why Sunakkhatta the Licchavi son did not hear divine sounds that are pleasing, connected with sensuality, and provocative of lust—though they exist, not because they do not exist."
