[263] "Furthermore, Kassapa, let the wise cross-examine, press, and question us, comparing teacher with teacher and community with community: 'Among the qualities (dhammā) of these worthy ones, those which are skillful and reckoned as skillful, reckoned as blameless, to be cultivated and reckoned as to be cultivated, worthy of the noble ones and reckoned as worthy of the noble ones, bright and reckoned as bright — who proceeds having undertaken these qualities without remainder: the ascetic Gotama, or the other worthy teachers of communities?'
"Now this is possible, Kassapa: that the wise, cross-examining, pressing, and questioning, would speak thus: 'Among the qualities of these worthy ones, those which are skillful and reckoned as skillful, blameless and reckoned as blameless, to be cultivated and reckoned as to be cultivated, worthy of the noble ones and reckoned as worthy of the noble ones, bright and reckoned as bright — it is the ascetic Gotama who proceeds having undertaken these qualities without remainder, rather than the other worthy teachers of communities.'
"Thus indeed, Kassapa, the wise, cross-examining, pressing, and questioning, would for the most part praise us alone in that matter."
