[288] "Venerable sir, does perception (saññā) arise first and knowledge (ñāṇa) afterwards? Or does knowledge arise first and perception afterwards? Or do perception and knowledge arise neither before nor after one another?"
"Poṭṭhapāda, perception arises first and knowledge afterwards; and it is from the arising of perception that the arising of knowledge comes about. One understands thus: 'With this as condition, it seems, knowledge arose in me.' By this method, Poṭṭhapāda, it should be understood how perception arises first and knowledge afterwards, and how from the arising of perception the arising of knowledge comes about."
