[297] "Poṭṭhapāda, all these wanderers are blind, without eyes; you alone among them are the one with eyes. For, Poṭṭhapāda, teachings (dhammā) that are categorical (ekaṃsika) have been taught and declared by me; and teachings that are not categorical (anekaṃsika) have also been taught and declared by me.
"And which, Poṭṭhapāda, are the teachings taught and declared by me that are not categorical? 'The world is eternal' — this, Poṭṭhapāda, is a teaching taught and declared by me as not categorical. 'The world is not eternal' — this, Poṭṭhapāda, is a teaching taught and declared by me as not categorical. 'The world is finite' — this, Poṭṭhapāda, is a teaching taught and declared by me as not categorical. 'The world is infinite' — this, Poṭṭhapāda, is a teaching taught and declared by me as not categorical. 'The soul (jīva) is the same as the body' — this, Poṭṭhapāda, is a teaching taught and declared by me as not categorical. 'The soul is one thing, the body another' — this, Poṭṭhapāda, is a teaching taught and declared by me as not categorical. 'The Tathāgata exists after death' — this, Poṭṭhapāda, … by me …. 'The Tathāgata does not exist after death' — this, Poṭṭhapāda, … by me …. 'The Tathāgata both exists and does not exist after death' — this, Poṭṭhapāda, … by me …. 'The Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death' — this, Poṭṭhapāda, is a teaching taught and declared by me as not categorical.
"And why, Poṭṭhapāda, have these teachings been taught and declared by me as not categorical? Because, Poṭṭhapāda, these are not connected with the goal, not connected with the Dhamma, not fundamental to the holy life; they do not lead to disenchantment, to dispassion, to cessation (nirodha), to peace, to direct knowledge, to full awakening, to Nibbāna. Therefore these teachings have been taught and declared by me as not categorical."
