[311] "But, Citta, if they were to ask you thus: 'The acquisition of a self (attapaṭilābha) that you had in the past — is that acquisition of a self alone real for you, while the future one is false and the present one is false? The acquisition of a self that you will have in the future — is that acquisition of a self alone real for you, while the past one is false and the present one is false? The acquisition of a self that is present for you now — is that acquisition of a self alone real for you, while the past one is false and the future one is false?' Being asked thus, Citta, how would you answer?"
"Venerable sir, if they were to ask me thus: 'The acquisition of a self that you had in the past — is that acquisition of a self alone real for you, while the future one is false and the present one is false? The acquisition of a self that you will have in the future — is that acquisition of a self alone real for you, while the past one is false and the present one is false? The acquisition of a self that is present for you now — is that acquisition of a self alone real for you, while the past one is false and the future one is false?' — being asked thus, venerable sir, I would answer thus: 'The acquisition of a self that I had in the past — that very acquisition of a self was real for me at that time, while the future one was false and the present one was false. The acquisition of a self that I will have in the future — that very acquisition of a self will be real for me at that time, while the past one will be false and the present one will be false. The acquisition of a self that is present for me now — that very acquisition of a self is real for me, while the past one is false and the future one is false.' Being asked thus, venerable sir, I would answer thus."
