[312] "Even so, Citta, at whatever time there is the gross acquisition of a self (oḷārika attapaṭilābha), at that time it is not reckoned as the mind-made (manomaya) acquisition of a self, nor is it reckoned as the formless (arūpa) acquisition of a self; at that time it is reckoned only as the gross acquisition of a self. Citta, at whatever time there is the mind-made acquisition of a self … Citta, at whatever time there is the formless acquisition of a self, at that time it is not reckoned as the gross acquisition of a self, nor is it reckoned as the mind-made acquisition of a self; at that time it is reckoned only as the formless acquisition of a self.
Just as, Citta, from the cow comes milk, from milk curds, from curds butter, from butter ghee, and from ghee cream of ghee: at whatever time it is milk, at that time it is not reckoned as curds, nor is it reckoned as butter, nor is it reckoned as ghee, nor is it reckoned as cream of ghee; at that time it is reckoned only as milk. At whatever time it is curds … it is butter … it is ghee … it is cream of ghee, at that time it is not reckoned as milk, nor is it reckoned as curds, nor is it reckoned as butter, nor is it reckoned as ghee; at that time it is reckoned only as cream of ghee.
Even so, Citta, at whatever time there is the gross acquisition of a self, at that time it is not reckoned as the mind-made acquisition of a self, nor is it reckoned as the formless acquisition of a self; at that time it is reckoned only as the gross acquisition of a self. At whatever time, Citta, there is the mind-made acquisition of a self … there is the formless acquisition of a self, at that time it is not reckoned as the gross acquisition of a self, nor is it reckoned as the mind-made acquisition of a self; at that time it is reckoned only as the formless acquisition of a self.
These, Citta, are worldly designations, worldly expressions, worldly usages, worldly conventions, with which the Tathāgata communicates without grasping at them."
