[347] "Then, Kevaṭṭa, that Mahābrahmā took that bhikkhu by the arm, led him aside to one side, and said to him: 'Bhikkhu, these gods of Brahmā's retinue (brahmakāyikā devā) know me thus: "There is nothing unknown to Brahmā, there is nothing unseen by Brahmā, there is nothing uncognized by Brahmā, there is nothing unrealized by Brahmā." Therefore I did not answer in their presence. But I too, bhikkhu, do not know where these four great elements (mahābhūtā) cease without remainder — that is, the earth element, the water element, the fire element, and the air element (dhātu). Therefore, bhikkhu, this is your own wrongdoing, this is your own error, in that, passing over the Blessed One, you have engaged in a search outside for the answer to this question. Go, bhikkhu; approach that same Blessed One and ask him this question, and as the Blessed One answers it to you, so should you bear it in mind.'"
