[366] Now at that time several very well-known brahmins of great wealth (brāhmaṇamahāsālā) were residing at Manasākaṭa, namely: the brahmin Vaṅkī, the brahmin Tārukkha, the brahmin Pokkharasāti, the brahmin Jāṇusoni, the brahmin Todeyya, and other very well-known brahmins of great wealth. Then, as the young brahmins Vāseṭṭha and Bhāradvāja were walking and wandering about to stretch their legs, a discussion arose between them concerning what is the path and what is not the path. The young brahmin Vāseṭṭha spoke thus: "This alone is the straight path, this the direct way, the way leading out, which leads one who practices accordingly to companionship with Brahmā — namely, that declared by the brahmin Pokkharasāti." The young brahmin Bhāradvāja spoke thus: "This alone is the straight path, this the direct way, the way leading out, which leads one who practices accordingly to companionship with Brahmā — namely, that declared by the brahmin Tārukkha." But neither was the young brahmin Vāseṭṭha able to convince the young brahmin Bhāradvāja, nor was the young brahmin Bhāradvāja able to convince the young brahmin Vāseṭṭha.
