[379] "Vāseṭṭha, the brahmins versed in the three Vedas (tevijjā) are obstructed, hindered, covered over, and enveloped by these five hindrances (nīvaraṇa). And those brahmins versed in the three Vedas, Vāseṭṭha, proceeding having abandoned those qualities that make one a brahmin, and proceeding having undertaken those qualities that make one not a brahmin—obstructed, hindered, covered over, and enveloped by the five hindrances—that they, with the breaking up of the body, after death, will attain to the company of Brahmā: this is not possible."
