[147] Now at that time, mango-thieves, having knocked down mangoes, took the bundle and went off. The owners pursued those thieves. The thieves, seeing the owners, dropped the bundle and fled. Bhikkhus, perceiving it as discarded refuse (paṃsukūla), had it received and consumed it. The owners accused those bhikkhus: "You are not ascetics!" They were remorseful. They informed the Blessed One of this matter. "What was your intention, bhikkhus?" "We perceived it as discarded refuse, Blessed One." "There is no offense (anāpatti), bhikkhus, for one who perceives it as discarded refuse."
Now at that time, rose-apple-thieves … breadfruit-thieves … jackfruit-thieves … ripe-palmyra-fruit-thieves … sugarcane-thieves … timbarūsaka-fruit-thieves, having gathered timbarūsaka fruits, took the bundle and went off. The owners pursued those thieves. The thieves, seeing the owners, dropped the bundle and fled. Bhikkhus, perceiving it as discarded refuse, had it received and consumed it. The owners accused those bhikkhus: "You are not ascetics!" They were remorseful. … "There is no offense, bhikkhus, for one who perceives it as discarded refuse."
