[148] Now at that time mango-thieves, having knocked down mangoes, took up the bundle and went off. The owners pursued those thieves. The thieves, seeing the owners, dropped the bundle and fled. The bhikkhus, thinking, "before the owners see them," ate them with the intent to steal (theyyacitta). The owners accused those bhikkhus: "You are not ascetics (samaṇa)!" They were remorseful … "Bhikkhus, you have committed an offense (āpatti) entailing defeat (pārājika)."
Now at that time rose-apple-thieves … breadfruit-thieves … jackfruit-thieves … thieves of ripe palmyra fruit … sugarcane-thieves … timbarūsaka-thieves, having picked timbarūsaka fruits, took up the bundle and went off. The owners pursued those thieves. The thieves, seeing the owners, dropped the bundle and fled. The bhikkhus, thinking, "before the owners see them," ate them with the intent to steal. The owners accused those bhikkhus: "You are not ascetics!" They were remorseful … "Bhikkhus, you have committed an offense entailing defeat."
