[152] Now at that time a certain man, taking a gem of great value, was traveling along a highroad together with a certain bhikkhu. Then that man, seeing a customs station, dropped the gem into the bag of that bhikkhu without his knowing it, and having passed beyond the customs station, took it back. Remorse arose in him … "What was your intention, bhikkhu?" "I did not know, Blessed One." "Bhikkhu, there is no offense (āpatti) for one who does not know."
Now at that time a certain man, taking a gem of great value, was traveling along a highroad together with a certain bhikkhu. Then that man, seeing a customs station, made a pretense of being ill and gave his own bundle to that bhikkhu. Then that man, having passed beyond the customs station, said this to that bhikkhu: "Bring me my bundle, venerable sir; I am not ill." "But why, friend, did you act in such a way?" Then that man informed that bhikkhu of the matter. Remorse arose in him … "What was your intention, bhikkhu?" "I did not know, Blessed One." "Bhikkhu, there is no offense for one who does not know."
Now at that time a certain bhikkhu was traveling along a highroad together with a caravan. A certain man, having won over that bhikkhu with material goods, on seeing a customs station gave a gem of great value to that bhikkhu, saying: "Venerable sir, take this gem past the customs station." Then that bhikkhu took that gem past the customs station. Remorse arose in him … "Bhikkhu, you have committed an offense of pārājika."
