[170] Now at that time bhikkhus used in another place a lodging (senāsana) that was for use in the dwelling of a certain lay follower (upāsaka). Then that lay follower criticized, denounced, and spread it about, saying, "How can the venerable ones use in one place what is for use in another place?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, what is for use in one place is not to be used in another place; whoever should so use it commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
Now at that time bhikkhus, being scrupulous about carrying [lodgings] even to the uposatha hall or to a place of assembly, sat on the bare ground. Both their limbs and their robes became soiled with dust. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow them to be carried temporarily."
