[198] "Placing nearby" (upanikkhipana) means: one places nearby a sword, a spear, a harpoon (bheṇḍi), a stake,² a club, a stone, a knife, poison, or a rope, [thinking], "He will die by this"—an offense of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa). If, [thinking], "I shall die by that," he produces painful feeling (vedanā), there is an offense of grave transgression (thullaccaya). If he dies, there is an offense entailing defeat (pārājika).
