[26] "Bhikkhu": he is a bhikkhu because he is one who begs; he is a bhikkhu because he has taken upon himself the practice of going for alms (bhikkhācariyā); he is a bhikkhu because he wears the patched cloth (bhinnapaṭadhara); he is a bhikkhu by designation; he is a bhikkhu by acknowledgment; he is a bhikkhu by "Come, bhikkhu" (ehi bhikkhu); he is a bhikkhu because he is fully ordained (upasampanna) through the three goings for refuge; he is a bhikkhu in the sense of being excellent (bhadra); he is a bhikkhu in the sense of being of the essence (sāra); he is a bhikkhu in that he is a trainee (sekha); he is a bhikkhu in that he is one beyond training (asekha); he is a bhikkhu because he has been fully ordained by a united Saṅgha through a formal act with a motion and three proclamations (ñatticatuttha kamma), which is unshakeable and fit to stand. Herein, whatever bhikkhu has been fully ordained by a united Saṅgha through a formal act with a motion and three proclamations, which is unshakeable and fit to stand — this is the bhikkhu intended in this context as "bhikkhu."
