[286] Now at that time a certain bhikkhu walked back and forth with the intention: "Thus will people esteem me." People esteemed him. He became remorseful. He reported this matter to the Blessed One. "There is no offense entailing defeat (pārājika), bhikkhu. But, bhikkhus, one should not walk back and forth with such an intention; whoever should so walk commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
Now at that time a certain bhikkhu stood with such an intention … sat with such an intention … lay down with the intention: "Thus will people esteem me." People esteemed him. He became remorseful. He reported this matter to the Blessed One. "There is no offense entailing defeat, bhikkhu. But, bhikkhus, one should not lie down with such an intention; whoever should so lie down commits an offense of wrong-doing."
