[546] Then the bhikkhunī Mettiyā approached the Mettiya-Bhummajaka bhikkhus; having approached, she said to the Mettiya-Bhummajaka bhikkhus: "I pay homage, noble sirs." When this was said, the Mettiya-Bhummajaka bhikkhus did not speak to her. A second time … A third time the bhikkhunī Mettiyā said to the Mettiya-Bhummajaka bhikkhus: "I pay homage, noble sirs." A third time the Mettiya-Bhummajaka bhikkhus did not speak to her.
"In what way have I offended the noble sirs? Why do the noble sirs not speak to me?"
"It is because, sister, while we are being harassed by Dabba the Mallaputta, you look on with indifference."
"What can I do, noble sirs?"
"If you were willing, sister, this very day the Blessed One would have Dabba the Mallaputta expelled."
"What shall I do, noble sirs? What is it possible for me to do?"
"Come, sister, approach the Blessed One, and having approached, say this to the Blessed One: 'This, venerable sir, is unbecoming and improper: that quarter, venerable sir, which was without fear, without calamity, without oppression — that quarter is now with fear, with calamity, with oppression. From where there was shelter, from there a gale now blows. The very water, it seems, is ablaze. I have been violated by the noble Dabba the Mallaputta.'"
"Very well, noble sirs," the bhikkhunī Mettiyā replied in assent to the Mettiya-Bhummajaka bhikkhus, and she approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, she stood to one side. Standing to one side, the bhikkhunī Mettiyā said this to the Blessed One: "This, venerable sir, is unbecoming and improper: that quarter, venerable sir, which was without fear, without calamity, without oppression — that quarter is now with fear, with calamity, with oppression. From where there was shelter, from there a gale now blows. The very water, it seems, is ablaze. I have been violated by the noble Dabba the Mallaputta."
