[633] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the Venerable Udāyi was a frequenter of families (kulupaka) in Sāvatthī, and he visited many families. Now at that time the daughter of a family that supported the Venerable Udāyi had been given to the young man of a certain family. Then the Venerable Udāyi, having dressed in the forenoon, taking his bowl and robe, approached that family; having approached, he asked the people, "Where is so-and-so?" They said, "She has been given, venerable sir, to the young man of such-and-such a family." That family too was a supporter of the Venerable Udāyi. Then the Venerable Udāyi approached that family; having approached, he asked the people, "Where is so-and-so?" "There she is, venerable sir, sitting in the inner chamber." Then the Venerable Udāyi approached that girl; having approached, he took a seat together with that girl — he alone with her alone — in private, on a concealed seat suitable for the act (alaṅkammaniya), conversing as suited the occasion, speaking Dhamma as suited the occasion.
