[622] Then the Saṅgha of bhikkhus headed by Sāriputta and Moggallāna, having gone to Kīṭāgiri, carried out the act of banishment (pabbājanīyakamma) against the Assaji-and-Punabbasuka bhikkhus from Kīṭāgiri: "The Assaji-and-Punabbasuka bhikkhus are not to dwell in Kīṭāgiri." They, though the act of banishment had been carried out against them by the Saṅgha, did not conduct themselves properly, did not become subdued, did not act so as to merit release, did not ask the bhikkhus for forgiveness; they abused and reviled them; they charged them with going astray through partiality, going astray through hatred, going astray through delusion, and going astray through fear; and they both departed and also disrobed. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … criticized, complained, and spread it about: "How can the Assaji-and-Punabbasuka bhikkhus, against whom the act of banishment has been carried out by the Saṅgha, not conduct themselves properly, not become subdued, not act so as to merit release, not ask the bhikkhus for forgiveness; abuse and revile them; charge them with going astray through partiality, going astray through hatred, going astray through delusion, and going astray through fear; and both depart and also disrobe?"
