[635] "Whoever" (yo pana): whoever, of whatever sort … "bhikkhu": … this is the one intended as "bhikkhu" in this context. "Woman" (mātugāma) means: a human female, not a female yakkha (yakkhī), not a female peta (petī), not a female animal — even a girl born that very day, all the more an older one.¹ "Together with" means: in one place. "One with one" means: there is a bhikkhu and there is a woman — that is, the two alone, with no third present. "Private" (raho) means: private to the eye, private to the ear. "Private to the eye" means: it is not possible to see when an eye is being closed, an eyebrow being raised, or the head being raised. "Private to the ear" means: it is not possible to hear ordinary talk. "Concealed" means: a seat concealed by a wall, by a door, by a woven mat-screen, by a canvas screen-wall, by a tree, by a pillar, by a grain-container (koṭṭhaḷī),² or concealed by anything whatsoever. "Convenient enough (for the act)" (alaṅkammaniya) means: it is possible to engage in sexual intercourse (methunaṃ dhammaṃ). "Should sit down" means: when the woman is seated, the bhikkhu is seated close by her or lying close by her; when the bhikkhu is seated, the woman is seated close by him or lying close by him; or both are seated, or both are lying down.
