[108] The young and also the old,
the foolish and the wise,
the rich and likewise the poor—
all are destined for death.
Just as the clay vessels made by a potter,
both small and great,
both fired and unfired,
all end in breakage—
even so is the life of mortals.
Then the Teacher spoke further thus:
Ripe is my age;
little of my life remains.
Leaving you, I shall go;
I have made a refuge for myself.
Be heedful, possessed of mindfulness,
and of good virtue, bhikkhus;
with intentions well composed,
guard your own mind (citta).
Whoever shall dwell heedful
in this Dhamma and Discipline,
having abandoned the round of birth (saṃsāra),
will make an end of suffering (dukkha).
End of the third recitation section.
