[109] Then in the morning the Blessed One, having dressed, taking his bowl and robe, entered Vesālī for alms. Having walked for alms in Vesālī, after the meal, on returning from the alms round, he looked back at Vesālī with an elephant's gaze (nāgāvalokita) and addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "Ānanda, this will be the last seeing of Vesālī by the Tathāgata. Come, Ānanda, let us go to Bhaṇḍagāma." "Even so, venerable sir," the Venerable Ānanda replied to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, together with a great Saṅgha of bhikkhus, arrived at Bhaṇḍagāma. There the Blessed One dwelt at Bhaṇḍagāma. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, it is through not understanding, through not penetrating four dhammas that this long course has thus been run on and wandered through by both me and you. What four? Bhikkhus, it is through not understanding, through not penetrating noble virtue (sīla) that this long course has thus been run on and wandered through by both me and you. Bhikkhus, it is through not understanding, through not penetrating noble concentration (samādhi) that this long course has thus been run on and wandered through by both me and you. Bhikkhus, it is through not understanding, through not penetrating noble wisdom (paññā) that this long course has thus been run on and wandered through by both me and you. Bhikkhus, it is through not understanding, through not penetrating noble liberation (vimutti) that this long course has thus been run on and wandered through by both me and you.
"Bhikkhus, this noble virtue has been understood and penetrated; noble concentration has been understood and penetrated; noble wisdom has been understood and penetrated; noble liberation has been understood and penetrated. Craving for existence (bhavataṇhā) has been cut off; the conduit to existence (bhavanetti) is destroyed; now there is no renewed existence."
Thus spoke the Blessed One. Having said this, the Sugata, the Teacher, further said this:
