Mahāsatipaṭṭhānasutta

Suttapiṭaka · Dīghanikāya · Mahāvagga · Vol. 10 · Section 273

[273] Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was dwelling among the Kurus, at a market town of the Kurus named Kammāsadamma. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus." "Venerable sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, this is the one-way path (ekāyana magga) for the purification of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the disappearance of suffering (dukkha) and grief, for the attainment of the true way (ñāya), for the realization of Nibbāna — namely, the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna). What four? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, possessed of mindfulness, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world; he dwells contemplating feelings (vedanā) in feelings, ardent, clearly comprehending, possessed of mindfulness, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world; he dwells contemplating the mind (citta) in the mind, ardent, clearly comprehending, possessed of mindfulness, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world; he dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending, possessed of mindfulness, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world." The section of the summary exposition (uddesavāra) is concluded.
