[292] Furthermore, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas in the six internal and external sense bases (āyatana). And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu dwell contemplating dhammas in dhammas in the six internal and external sense bases?
Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu understands the eye, and he understands forms, and he understands the fetter that arises in dependence on both; and how there comes to be the arising of the unarisen fetter, that too he understands; and how there comes to be the abandoning of the arisen fetter, that too he understands; and how there comes to be the future non-arising of the abandoned fetter, that too he understands.
He understands the ear, and he understands sounds. He understands the nose, and he understands odours. He understands the tongue, and he understands tastes. He understands the body, and he understands tangibles. He understands the mind, and he understands dhammas, and he understands the fetter that arises in dependence on both; and how there comes to be the arising of the unarisen fetter, that too he understands; and how there comes to be the abandoning of the arisen fetter, that too he understands; and how there comes to be the future non-arising of the abandoned fetter, that too he understands.
Thus he dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas internally, or he dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas externally, or he dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas both internally and externally. He dwells contemplating the nature of origination in dhammas, or he dwells contemplating the nature of vanishing in dhammas, or he dwells contemplating the nature of both origination and vanishing in dhammas. Or else the mindfulness that "there are dhammas" is established in him, just to the extent necessary for knowledge (ñāṇa) and continued mindfulness. And he dwells independent, not clinging to anything in the world. Thus too, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas in the six internal and external sense bases.
