[144] Again, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu abides contemplating dhammas in dhammas with regard to the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga). And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu abide contemplating dhammas in dhammas with regard to the seven factors of awakening? Here, bhikkhus, when the awakening factor of mindfulness (sati) is present within him, a bhikkhu understands: "The awakening factor of mindfulness is present within me"; or when the awakening factor of mindfulness is not present within him, he understands: "The awakening factor of mindfulness is not present within me." And he understands how there comes to be the arising of the awakening factor of mindfulness that has not yet arisen, and he understands how there comes to be the fulfillment by development of the awakening factor of mindfulness that has arisen.
When the awakening factor of investigation of dhammas (dhammavicaya) is present within him … When the awakening factor of energy (vīriya) is present within him … When the awakening factor of rapture (pīti) is present within him … When the awakening factor of tranquility (passaddhi) is present within him … When the awakening factor of concentration (samādhi) is present within him … When the awakening factor of equanimity (upekkhā) is present within him, he understands: "The awakening factor of equanimity is present within me"; or when the awakening factor of equanimity is not present within him, he understands: "The awakening factor of equanimity is not present within me." And he understands how there comes to be the arising of the awakening factor of equanimity that has not yet arisen, and he understands how there comes to be the fulfillment by development of the awakening factor of equanimity that has arisen.
Thus he abides contemplating dhammas in dhammas internally, or he abides contemplating dhammas in dhammas externally, or he abides contemplating dhammas in dhammas both internally and externally. He abides contemplating in dhammas their nature of origination, or he abides contemplating in dhammas their nature of vanishing, or he abides contemplating in dhammas their nature of both origination and vanishing. Or else his mindfulness that "there are dhammas" is established to the extent necessary merely for knowledge (ñāṇa) and continued mindfulness; and he abides independent, not clinging to anything in the world. Thus too, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu abides contemplating dhammas in dhammas with regard to the seven factors of awakening.
