[293] Bhikkhus, furthermore, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas among the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga). And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu dwell contemplating dhammas in dhammas among the seven factors of awakening? Here, bhikkhus, when the awakening factor of mindfulness (sati) is present within him, a bhikkhu clearly knows, 'The awakening factor of mindfulness is present within me'; or when the awakening factor of mindfulness is not present within him, he clearly knows, 'The awakening factor of mindfulness is not present within me'; and he clearly knows how the unarisen awakening factor of mindfulness comes to arise, and he clearly knows how the arisen awakening factor of mindfulness comes to fulfillment by development (bhāvanā). When the awakening factor of investigation of dhammas (dhammavicaya) is present within him … When the awakening factor of energy (vīriya) is present within him … When the awakening factor of rapture (pīti) is present within him … When the awakening factor of tranquility (passaddhi) is present within him … When the awakening factor of concentration (samādhi) is present within him … When the awakening factor of equanimity (upekkhā) is present within him, he clearly knows, 'The awakening factor of equanimity is present within me'; or when the awakening factor of equanimity is not present within him, he clearly knows, 'The awakening factor of equanimity is not present within me'; and he clearly knows how the unarisen awakening factor of equanimity comes to arise, and he clearly knows how the arisen awakening factor of equanimity comes to fulfillment by development.
Thus he dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas internally, or he dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas externally, or he dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas both internally and externally. He dwells contemplating in dhammas the nature of origination, or he dwells contemplating in dhammas the nature of vanishing, or he dwells contemplating in dhammas the nature of both origination and vanishing. Or else his mindfulness that 'there are dhammas' is established, merely to the extent of knowledge (ñāṇa), merely to the extent of remembrance. And he dwells independent, not clinging to anything in the world. Thus too, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu dwell contemplating dhammas in dhammas among the seven factors of awakening.
