[103] Cunda, even if the holy life (brahmacariya) is endowed with these factors, and the teacher is an elder, of long standing (rattaññū), long gone forth, advanced in years, and arrived at the last stage of life, yet he has no elder bhikkhu disciples who are competent, trained, confident, and who have attained security from the yokes (yogakkhema) — able to expound the true Dhamma (saddhamma) properly, able, having thoroughly refuted in accordance with the Dhamma any doctrine of others (parappavāda) that has arisen, to teach the Dhamma with its demonstrable, convincing quality (sappāṭihāriya) — then that holy life is incomplete in that respect.
But when, Cunda, the holy life is endowed with these factors, and the teacher is an elder, of long standing, long gone forth, advanced in years, and arrived at the last stage of life, and his elder bhikkhu disciples are competent, trained, confident, and have attained security from the yokes — able to expound the true Dhamma properly, able, having thoroughly refuted in accordance with the Dhamma any doctrine of others that has arisen, to teach the Dhamma with its demonstrable, convincing quality — then that holy life is complete in that respect.
