[104] Cunda, even if the holy life (brahmacariya) is endowed with these factors—the teacher is a senior, of long standing, long gone forth, advanced in years, having reached the final stage of life; and his senior bhikkhu disciples are competent, trained, self-assured, … capable of teaching the Dhamma with its demonstrable basis (sappāṭihāriya), having thoroughly refuted, in accordance with the Dhamma, the doctrines of others that have arisen—yet he has no middle bhikkhu disciples; or there are middle bhikkhu disciples, but he has no newly ordained bhikkhu disciples; there are newly ordained bhikkhunī female disciples, but he has no senior bhikkhunī female disciples; or there are senior bhikkhunī female disciples, but he has no middle bhikkhunī female disciples; or there are middle bhikkhunī female disciples, but he has no newly ordained bhikkhunī female disciples; or there are newly ordained bhikkhunī female disciples, but he has no layman disciples—householders clothed in white who lead the celibate life; or there are layman disciples—householders clothed in white who lead the celibate life—but he has no layman disciples—householders clothed in white who enjoy sensual pleasures; or there are layman disciples—householders clothed in white who enjoy sensual pleasures—but he has no laywoman female disciples—householders clothed in white who lead the celibate life; or there are laywoman female disciples—householders clothed in white who lead the celibate life—but he has no laywoman female disciples—householders clothed in white who enjoy sensual pleasures; or there are laywoman female disciples—householders clothed in white who enjoy sensual pleasures—but his holy life is not successful and prosperous, widespread, known to many, disseminated far and wide, well proclaimed as far as gods and humans; or his holy life is successful and prosperous, widespread, known to many, disseminated far and wide, well proclaimed as far as gods and humans, but has not attained the foremost in gain and the foremost in fame—then that holy life is incomplete in that respect.
But when, Cunda, the holy life is endowed with these very factors—the teacher is a senior, of long standing, long gone forth, advanced in years, having reached the final stage of life; and his senior bhikkhu disciples are competent, trained, self-assured, … to teach the Dhamma with its demonstrable basis; and there are his middle bhikkhu disciples; and there are his newly ordained bhikkhu disciples; and there are his senior bhikkhunī female disciples; and there are his middle bhikkhunī female disciples; and there are his newly ordained bhikkhunī female disciples; and there are his layman disciples—householders clothed in white who lead the celibate life; and there are his layman disciples—householders clothed in white who enjoy sensual pleasures; and there are his laywoman female disciples—householders clothed in white who lead the celibate life; and there are his laywoman female disciples—householders clothed in white who enjoy sensual pleasures; and his holy life is successful and prosperous, widespread, known to many, disseminated far and wide, well proclaimed as far as gods and humans, and has attained the foremost in gain and the foremost in fame—then that holy life is complete in that respect.
