[226] There is, friends, one dhamma that has been rightly proclaimed by that Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Fully Enlightened One (arahā sammāsambuddho). Therein all should recite together in concord and should not dispute, so that this holy life (brahmacariya) may endure and stand long; and that will be for the welfare of the many, for the happiness of the many, out of compassion for the world, for the good, welfare, and happiness of devas and human beings. What is the one dhamma? All beings subsist by nutriment (āhāra); all beings subsist by conditions (saṅkhāra). This, friends, is the one dhamma that has been rightly proclaimed by that Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Fully Enlightened One. Therein all should recite together in concord and should not dispute, so that this holy life may endure and stand long; and that will be for the welfare of the many, for the happiness of the many, out of compassion for the world, for the good, welfare, and happiness of devas and human beings.
