[227] Friends, there are two dhammas rightly proclaimed by that Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One; herein all should recite in concert … for the good, for the welfare, for the happiness of gods and humans. Which two dhammas? Name and form (nāma-rūpa). Ignorance (avijjā) and craving for existence (bhavataṇhā). The view of existence (bhavadiṭṭhi) and the view of non-existence (vibhavadiṭṭhi). Lack of moral shame (ahirika) and lack of moral dread (anottappa). Moral shame (hiri) and moral dread (ottappa). Being difficult to admonish (dovacassatā) and bad friendship (pāpamittatā). Being easy to admonish (sovacassatā) and good friendship (kalyāṇamittatā). Skill in offenses (āpattikusalatā) and skill in emerging from offenses (āpattivuṭṭhānakusalatā). Skill in the attainments (samāpattikusalatā) and skill in emerging from the attainments (samāpattivuṭṭhānakusalatā). Skill in the elements (dhātu) and skill in attention (manasikārakusalatā). Skill in the sense bases (āyatana) and skill in dependent origination (paṭiccasamuppāda). Skill in the possible (ṭhānakusalatā) and skill in the impossible (aṭṭhānakusalatā). Rectitude (ājjava) and gentleness (maddava). Patience (khanti) and meekness (soracca). Gentle speech (sākhalya) and hospitality (paṭisanthāra). Harmlessness (avihiṃsā) and purity (soceyya). Muddled mindfulness (muṭṭhasacca) and lack of clear comprehension (asampajañña). Mindfulness (sati) and clear comprehension (sampajañña). Being unguarded as to the doors of the sense faculties and immoderation in eating. Being guarded as to the doors of the sense faculties and moderation in eating. The power of reflection (paṭisaṅkhānabala) and the power of development (bhāvanābala). The power of mindfulness and the power of concentration (samādhi). Serenity (samatha) and insight (vipassanā). The sign of serenity (samathanimitta) and the sign of exertion (paggahanimitta). Exertion (paggaha) and non-distraction (avikkhepa). Failure in virtue (sīlavipatti) and failure in view (diṭṭhivipatti). Accomplishment in virtue (sīlasampadā) and accomplishment in view (diṭṭhisampadā). Purity of virtue (sīlavisuddhi) and purity of view (diṭṭhivisuddhi). Purity of view, and striving in accordance with that view. A sense of urgency (saṃvega) with regard to occasions for urgency, and the wise striving of one stirred by urgency. Non-contentment with wholesome dhammas and non-recoiling in striving. True knowledge (vijjā) and liberation (vimutti). Knowledge (ñāṇa) of destruction and knowledge of non-arising. These, friends, are the two dhammas rightly proclaimed by that Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One; herein all should recite in concert … for the happiness of gods and humans.
