[230] Four right strivings (sammappadhāna): Here, friends, a bhikkhu generates desire (chanda), strives, arouses energy (vīriya), applies his mind (citta), and endeavors for the non-arising of evil, unwholesome states (akusalā dhammā) that have not yet arisen. He generates desire, strives, arouses energy, applies his mind, and endeavors for the abandoning of evil, unwholesome states that have already arisen. He generates desire, strives, arouses energy, applies his mind, and endeavors for the arising of wholesome states (kusalā dhammā) that have not yet arisen. He generates desire, strives, arouses energy, applies his mind, and endeavors for the persistence, non-decay, increase, expansion, development, and fulfillment of wholesome states that have arisen.
