[76] And furthermore, venerable sir, this too is unsurpassable: the way the Blessed One teaches the Dhamma concerning the designation of the sense bases (āyatanapaṇṇatti). Venerable sir, there are these six internal and external sense bases (āyatana): the eye and forms, the ear and sounds, the nose and odors, the tongue and tastes, the body and tangibles, and the mind and mental phenomena (dhammā). This, venerable sir, is unsurpassable concerning the designation of the sense bases. The Blessed One directly knows this without remainder; for the Blessed One, who directly knows this without remainder, there is nothing further to be directly known whereby another ascetic or brahmin, directly knowing it, might be of greater direct knowledge than the Blessed One, that is, concerning the designation of the sense bases.
