[209] Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was dwelling among the Sakyans at Kapilavatthu, in the Nigrodhārāma. Then Mahānāma the Sakyan approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, Mahānāma the Sakyan said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, for a long time I have understood the Dhamma taught by the Blessed One thus: 'Greed (lobha) is a corruption (upakkilesa) of the mind (citta); hatred (dosa) is a corruption of the mind; delusion (moha) is a corruption of the mind.' And, venerable sir, I do understand the Dhamma taught by the Blessed One thus: 'Greed is a corruption of the mind; hatred is a corruption of the mind; delusion is a corruption of the mind.' Yet at times states of greed invade my mind and remain, states of hatred invade my mind and remain, and states of delusion invade my mind and remain. It occurs to me, venerable sir: 'What dhamma, then, is still unabandoned within me, on account of which at times states of greed invade my mind and remain, states of hatred invade my mind and remain, and states of delusion invade my mind and remain?'"
