[216] Furthermore, Mahānāma, with sensual pleasures (kāma) as cause, with sensual pleasures as source, with sensual pleasures as basis — simply on account of sensual pleasures — having taken up sword and shield, having girded on bow and quiver, men charge up to ramparts whose battlements are smeared with slippery plaster; and while arrows are being shot, while spears are being hurled, while swords are flashing, there they are pierced by arrows, pierced by spears, doused with dung, crushed with the heavy [crushing] weapon, and their heads are cut off with swords; and there they incur death, and suffering (dukkha) nigh unto death. This too, Mahānāma, is a danger (ādīnava) in sensual pleasures, visible here and now — a mass of suffering with sensual pleasures as cause, with sensual pleasures as source, with sensual pleasures as basis, simply on account of sensual pleasures.
