[217] Furthermore, Mahānāma, with sensual pleasures as the cause, with sensual pleasures as the source, with sensual pleasures as the basis, simply on account of sensual pleasures, people break into houses, carry off plunder, commit burglary of a solitary house, ambush travellers on the highway, and go to the wives of others. Kings, having arrested such a person, inflict various punishments upon him: they flog him with whips, they beat him with canes, they beat him with cudgels … they subject him to the 'garland of fire' (jotimālika), the 'burning hand', the 'bulrush twist', the 'bark dress', the 'antelope', the 'meat hook', the 'coins', the 'caustic pickle', the 'twisting bar', and the 'straw mat'; they douse him with hot oil, have him devoured by dogs, impale him alive on a stake, and cut off his head with a sword. There they incur death, and suffering (dukkha) like unto death. This too, Mahānāma, is a danger (ādīnava) in sensual pleasures visible here and now, a mass of suffering, with sensual pleasures as the cause, with sensual pleasures as the source, with sensual pleasures as the basis — arising simply on account of sensual pleasures.
