[229] Which are the five bondages of the mind (cetaso vinibandha) that he has not severed? Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu is not devoid of lust for sensual pleasures, not devoid of desire, not devoid of affection, not devoid of thirst, not devoid of fever, not devoid of craving (taṇhā). Bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu is not devoid of lust for sensual pleasures, not devoid of desire, not devoid of affection, not devoid of thirst, not devoid of fever, not devoid of craving, his mind (citta) does not incline to ardor, to application, to perseverance, to striving. When one's mind … to striving — thus this first bondage of the mind is unsevered in him.
Again, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is not devoid of lust for the body … he is not devoid of lust for form (rūpa), not devoid of desire, not devoid of affection, not devoid of thirst, not devoid of fever, not devoid of craving. Bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu is not devoid of lust for form … — thus this third bondage of the mind is unsevered in him.
Again, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, having eaten as much as he wishes until his belly is full, dwells devoted to the pleasure of lying down, the pleasure of reclining, the pleasure of sleep. Bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu, having eaten as much as he wishes until his belly is full, dwells devoted to the pleasure of lying down, the pleasure of reclining, the pleasure of sleep, his mind does not incline to ardor, to application, to perseverance, to striving. When one's mind does not incline to ardor, to application, to perseverance, to striving — thus this fourth bondage of the mind is unsevered in him.
Again, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu will lead the holy life aspiring to some order of gods, thinking: "By this virtue, or by this observance, or by this austerity, or by this holy life, I shall become a god or one among the gods." Bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu will lead the holy life aspiring to some order of gods, thinking: "By this virtue, or by this observance, or by this austerity, or by this holy life, I shall become a god or one among the gods," his mind does not incline to ardor, to application, to perseverance, to striving. When one's mind does not incline to ardor, to application, to perseverance, to striving — thus this fifth bondage of the mind is unsevered in him. These are the five bondages of the mind that are unsevered in him.
Bhikkhus, whatever bhikkhu has not abandoned these five barrennesses of the mind (cetokhila) and has not severed these five bondages of the mind — that he should indeed come to growth, increase, and abundance in this Dhamma and Discipline: this is not possible.
