Suttapiṭaka · Majjhimanikāya · Vol. 12 · Section 498

[498] "But, friend, how many kinds of existence (bhava) are there?" "Friend, there are these three kinds of existence: sense-sphere existence (kāmabhava), form existence (rūpabhava), and formless existence (arūpabhava)." "But, friend, how does the production of renewed existence in the future come about?" "Friend, for beings hindered by ignorance (avijjā) and fettered by craving (taṇhā), there is delighting now here, now there: thus does the production of renewed existence in the future come about." "But, friend, how does the production of renewed existence in the future not come about?" "Friend, through the fading away of ignorance, through the arising of true knowledge (vijjā), and through the cessation of craving: thus does the production of renewed existence in the future not come about."
