[499] "And what, friend, is the first jhāna?"
"Here, friend, a **bhikkhu**, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome states, enters and dwells in the first jhāna, which is accompanied by applied thought (vitakka) and sustained thought (vicāra), with **rapture** (pīti) and happiness (sukha) born of seclusion. This, friend, is called the first jhāna."
"And how many factors, friend, does the first jhāna have?"
"The first jhāna, friend, has five factors. Here, friend, when a bhikkhu has entered the first jhāna, which has five factors, there occur applied thought, sustained thought, rapture, happiness, and unification of mind (cittekaggatā). Thus, friend, the first jhāna has five factors."
"And how many factors, friend, has the first jhāna abandoned, and with how many factors is it endowed?"
"The first jhāna, friend, has abandoned five factors and is endowed with five factors. Here, friend, when a bhikkhu has entered the first jhāna, **sensual desire** (kāmacchanda) is abandoned, **ill will** (byāpāda) is abandoned, **dullness and drowsiness** (thīnamiddha) are abandoned, **restlessness and remorse** (uddhaccakukkucca) are abandoned, and **doubt** (vicikicchā) is abandoned; and there occur applied thought, sustained thought, rapture, happiness, and unification of mind. Thus, friend, the first jhāna has abandoned five factors and is endowed with five factors."
