[89] Bhikkhus, if a bhikkhu should wish: 'May I, with the divine eye (dibbacakkhu), purified and surpassing the human, see beings passing away and being reborn — inferior and superior, fair and ugly, fortunate and unfortunate — and may I understand beings as faring according to their kamma (yathākammūpaga) thus: "These worthy beings, endowed with bodily misconduct, endowed with verbal misconduct, endowed with mental misconduct, revilers of the noble ones, holding wrong view, undertaking actions under the influence of wrong view — with the breakup of the body, after death, they have been reborn in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, a place of ruin, even in hell (apāya, duggati, vinipāta, niraya). But these worthy beings, endowed with bodily good conduct, endowed with verbal good conduct, endowed with mental good conduct, not revilers of the noble ones, holding right view, undertaking actions under the influence of right view — with the breakup of the body, after death, they have been reborn in a good destination, a heavenly world." Thus, with the divine eye, purified and surpassing the human, may I see beings passing away and being reborn — inferior and superior, fair and ugly, fortunate and unfortunate — and may I understand beings as faring according to their kamma' — then let him be one who fulfills the precepts, devoted to internal serenity of mind (ceto-samatha), one who does not neglect meditation (jhāna), endowed with insight (vipassanā), a cultivator of empty dwellings (suññāgāra).
