[258] "For, worthy Gotama, if the worthy Gotama had been one accomplished in this Dhamma, and the bhikkhus had been accomplished, and the bhikkhunīs had been accomplished, but the laymen followers (upāsaka) — householders clothed in white, living the celibate life (sabrahmacārī) — had not been accomplished, then this holy life (brahmacariya) would have been incomplete in that respect. But since, worthy Gotama, the worthy Gotama is accomplished in this Dhamma, and the bhikkhus are accomplished, and the bhikkhunīs are accomplished, and the laymen followers, householders clothed in white living the celibate life, are accomplished, this holy life is thus complete in that respect.
For, worthy Gotama, if the worthy Gotama had been one accomplished in this Dhamma, and the bhikkhus had been accomplished, and the bhikkhunīs had been accomplished, and the laymen followers, householders clothed in white living the celibate life, had been accomplished, but the laymen followers — householders clothed in white, enjoying sensual pleasures (kāmabhogī) — had not been accomplished, then this holy life would have been incomplete in that respect. But since, worthy Gotama, the worthy Gotama is accomplished in this Dhamma, and the bhikkhus are accomplished, and the bhikkhunīs are accomplished, and the laymen followers, householders clothed in white living the celibate life, are accomplished, and the laymen followers, householders clothed in white enjoying sensual pleasures, are accomplished, this holy life is thus complete in that respect.
