[259] "Master Gotama, just as the river Gaṅgā slants toward the ocean, slopes toward the ocean, inclines toward the ocean, and stands touching the ocean, even so this assembly of Master Gotama's, with its householders and those gone forth, slants toward Nibbāna, slopes toward Nibbāna, inclines toward Nibbāna, and stands touching Nibbāna.
"Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent, Master Gotama! Just as one might set upright what has been overturned, or uncover what has been concealed, or point out the way to one who is lost, or hold up an oil lamp in the darkness so that those with eyes might see forms, even so has the Dhamma been made clear in many ways by Master Gotama. I go to Master Gotama for refuge, and to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. May I receive the going forth (pabbajjā) in Master Gotama's presence; may I receive the full ordination (upasampadā)."
"Vaccha, one formerly of another sect who desires the going forth in this Dhamma and Discipline (dhammavinaya), who desires the full ordination, dwells on probation (parivāsa) for four months. At the end of four months, the bhikkhus, their minds satisfied, give him the going forth and the full ordination to the state of a bhikkhu. However, a difference among individuals is known to me in this matter."
"Venerable sir, if those formerly of another sect, desiring the going forth in this Dhamma and Discipline, desiring the full ordination, dwell on probation for four months, and at the end of four months the bhikkhus, their minds satisfied, give them the going forth and the full ordination to the state of a bhikkhu, then I will dwell on probation for four years. At the end of four years, let the bhikkhus, their minds satisfied, give me the going forth and the full ordination to the state of a bhikkhu."
And the wanderer Vacchagotta received the going forth in the presence of the Blessed One; he received the full ordination.
