[334] Furthermore, Udāyi, I have declared to my disciples the practice by which my disciples, practicing accordingly, develop the four right strivings (sammappadhāna). Here, Udāyi, a bhikkhu generates desire (chanda), strives, arouses energy, exerts his mind (citta), and endeavors for the non-arising of evil, unwholesome dhammas that have not yet arisen; he generates desire, strives, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and endeavors for the abandoning of evil, unwholesome dhammas that have arisen; he generates desire, strives, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and endeavors for the arising of wholesome dhammas that have not yet arisen; he generates desire, strives, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and endeavors for the persistence, non-decline, increase, abundance, development, and fulfillment of wholesome dhammas that have arisen. And therein many of my disciples abide, having attained the consummation and perfection of direct knowledge (abhiññā).
