[349] Furthermore, Udāyi, I have declared to my disciples the way of practice, and my disciples, practicing in accordance with it, experience the manifold kinds of psychic power (iddhividha): having been one, they become many; having been many, they become one; they appear and vanish; they go unhindered through walls, through ramparts, through mountains, as if through space; they dive in and out of the earth as if it were water; they walk on water without sinking as if it were earth; they travel cross-legged through the air like a winged bird; with the hand they touch and stroke even this moon and sun, so mighty and powerful; and they exercise mastery with the body even as far as the Brahmā world.
Just as, Udāyi, a skilled potter or a potter's apprentice, with well-prepared clay, might make and produce whatever kind of vessel he wishes; or just as, Udāyi, a skilled ivory-worker or an ivory-worker's apprentice, with well-prepared ivory, might make and produce whatever kind of ivory work he wishes; or just as, Udāyi, a skilled goldsmith or a goldsmith's apprentice, with well-prepared gold, might make and produce whatever kind of gold work he wishes—even so, Udāyi, I have declared to my disciples the way of practice, and my disciples, practicing in accordance with it, experience the manifold kinds of psychic power: having been one, they become many; having been many, they become one; they appear and vanish; they go unhindered through walls, through ramparts, through mountains, as if through space; they dive in and out of the earth as if it were water; they walk on water without sinking as if it were earth; they travel cross-legged through the air like a winged bird; with the hand they touch and stroke even this moon and sun, so mighty and powerful; and they exercise mastery with the body even as far as the Brahmā world.
And therein many of my disciples dwell, having attained the consummation and perfection of direct knowledge (abhiññā).
