Suttapiṭaka · Majjhimanikāya · Vol. 13 · Section 352

[352] "Furthermore, Udāyī, I have declared to my disciples the way of practice (paṭipadā), practicing in accordance with which my disciples recollect their manifold past lives (pubbenivāsa); that is: one birth (jāti), two births, three births, four births, five births, ten births, twenty births, thirty births, forty births, fifty births, a hundred births, a thousand births, a hundred thousand births; many eons of world-contraction (saṃvaṭṭakappa), many eons of world-expansion (vivaṭṭakappa), many eons of world-contraction and world-expansion: 'There I was, so named, of such a clan, of such appearance, with such food, experiencing such pleasure and pain (dukkha), with such a life span; and passing away from there, I arose elsewhere; there too I was so named, of such a clan, of such appearance, with such food, experiencing such pleasure and pain, with such a life span; and passing away from there, I was reborn here.' Thus they recollect their manifold past lives with their aspects and particulars. Udāyī, suppose a man were to go from his own village to another village, and from that village were to go to yet another village, and from that village he were to return to his own village. It would occur to him: 'I went from my own village to that village; there I stood thus, sat thus, spoke [thus], kept silent thus; from that village I went to that other village; there too I stood thus, sat thus, spoke thus, kept silent thus; and from that village I have returned to my own village.' Even so, Udāyī, I have declared to my disciples the way of practice, practicing in accordance with which my disciples recollect their manifold past lives; that is: one birth, two births … Thus they recollect their manifold past lives with their aspects and particulars. And therein many disciples of mine abide having attained the consummation and perfection of direct knowledge (abhiññā)."
