[351] "Again, Udāyi, I have declared to my disciples the way of practice (paṭipadā), practicing in accordance with which my disciples understand the minds (citta) of other beings, of other persons, having encompassed them with their own mind: a mind with lust (rāga) they understand as 'a mind with lust'; a mind free from lust they understand as 'a mind free from lust'; a mind with hatred they understand as 'a mind with hatred'; a mind free from hatred they understand as 'a mind free from hatred'; a mind with delusion they understand as 'a mind with delusion'; a mind free from delusion they understand as 'a mind free from delusion'; a contracted mind they understand as 'a contracted mind'; a distracted mind they understand as 'a distracted mind'; an exalted (mahaggata) mind they understand as 'an exalted mind'; an unexalted mind they understand as 'an unexalted mind'; a surpassable mind they understand as 'a surpassable mind'; an unsurpassable mind they understand as 'an unsurpassable mind'; a concentrated mind they understand as 'a concentrated mind'; an unconcentrated mind they understand as 'an unconcentrated mind'; a liberated mind they understand as 'a liberated mind'; an unliberated mind they understand as 'an unliberated mind.'
"Just as, Udāyi, a woman or a man, young, youthful, fond of adornment, examining the reflection of his or her own face in a pure, bright mirror or in a bowl of clear water, would know, if it had a blemish, 'it has a blemish,' or would know, if it had no blemish, 'it has no blemish' — even so, Udāyi, I have declared to my disciples the way of practice, practicing in accordance with which my disciples understand the minds of other beings, of other persons, having encompassed them with their own mind: a mind with lust they understand as 'a mind with lust'; a mind free from lust they understand as 'a mind free from lust'; a mind with hatred they understand as 'a mind with hatred'; a mind free from hatred they understand as 'a mind free from hatred'; a mind with delusion … a mind free from delusion … a contracted mind … a distracted mind … an exalted mind … an unexalted mind … a surpassable mind … an unsurpassable mind … a concentrated mind … an unconcentrated mind … a liberated mind … an unliberated mind they understand as 'an unliberated mind.'
