[368] Now on that occasion the wanderer Sakuludāyī was sitting with a large assembly of wanderers, which was making an uproar, with loud voices and a great noise, engaged in various kinds of low talk (tiracchānakathā) — namely, talk of kings … or talk of existence in this or that state. The wanderer Sakuludāyī saw the Blessed One coming while still far off; having seen him, he called his own assembly to order: "Sirs, be quiet; sirs, make no noise. Here comes the ascetic Gotama. That venerable one is fond of quiet and speaks in praise of quiet. Perhaps, if he finds the assembly quiet, he may see fit to approach." Then those wanderers fell silent.
Then the Blessed One approached the wanderer Sakuludāyī. Then the wanderer Sakuludāyī said this to the Blessed One: "Let the Blessed One come, venerable sir! Welcome, venerable sir, to the Blessed One! It has been long, venerable sir, since the Blessed One found occasion to come here. Let the Blessed One be seated, venerable sir; this seat is prepared." The Blessed One sat down on the seat prepared. The wanderer Sakuludāyī, taking a certain low seat, sat down to one side. When the wanderer Sakuludāyī was seated to one side, the Blessed One said this to him: "Udāyi, for the sake of what talk are you sitting together here just now? And what was the talk among you that was left unfinished?"
