[385] "Here, Udāyī, a Tathāgata arises in the world — an Arahant, a Perfectly Self-Enlightened One, accomplished in true knowledge (vijjā) and conduct, a Sublime One, knower of the world, unsurpassed charioteer of persons to be tamed, teacher of devas and humans, the Awakened One, the Blessed One … Having abandoned these five hindrances (nīvaraṇa), corruptions of the mind (citta) that weaken wisdom, quite secluded from sensual pleasures … he enters and dwells in the first jhāna. This too, Udāyī, is a dhamma higher and more sublime, for the sake of the realization of which bhikkhus live the holy life under me.
Again, Udāyī, with the stilling of thought and examination … a bhikkhu enters and dwells in the second jhāna … the third jhāna … the fourth jhāna. This too, Udāyī, is a dhamma higher and more sublime, for the sake of the realization of which bhikkhus live the holy life under me."
