[596] Then it occurred to the brahmin Brahmāyu: "I have been granted the opportunity by the ascetic Gotama. Now should I ask the ascetic Gotama about the good pertaining to this present life, or the good pertaining to the life to come?" Then it occurred to the brahmin Brahmāyu: "I am skilled in the goods pertaining to the present life, and others too ask me about the good pertaining to the present life. Suppose I were to ask the ascetic Gotama only about the good pertaining to the life to come." Then the brahmin Brahmāyu addressed the Blessed One in verses:
"How, sir, does one become a brahmin? How does one become a master of knowledge (vedagū)?
How, sir, is one possessed of the threefold knowledge? How is one called a scholar (sotthiya)?
How, sir, does one become an arahant (arahaṃ)? How does one become a consummate one (kevalī)?
How, sir, does one become a sage (muni)? And how is one declared to be a Buddha?"
